About Orthopaedics
Our Orthopaedics department treats injuries and diseases of the bones, joints, ligaments and muscles, from a fracture after a fall to years of knee pain from arthritis.
Treatment starts with an examination and X-ray, and many problems settle with medicines, a brace or physiotherapy. When surgery is the better answer, such as for a badly broken bone or a worn-out joint, our orthopaedic surgeon explains the options before anything is decided.
Questions patients ask
When should I see an orthopedician?
See an orthopedician after a fall or injury with swelling or pain on moving, for joint pain that lasts more than a few weeks, for knee or back pain that limits walking, or when an injury does not heal as expected.
Does every knee pain need a knee replacement?
No. Most knee pain improves with medicines, weight control, exercises and physiotherapy. Replacement is considered only when arthritis is advanced and other treatment no longer helps.
What should I bring to an orthopaedic appointment?
Bring any earlier X-rays or MRI reports, prescriptions, and a list of the medicines you take. Wear loose clothing so the painful joint can be examined.
