About Laparoscopic Surgery
Our surgeons treat conditions of the abdomen and digestive system that need an operation. Where suitable, they use laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, done through small cuts with a camera, which usually means less pain, smaller scars and a shorter hospital stay.
Not every patient or condition is suitable for keyhole surgery. The surgeon examines you and your reports, and explains which kind of operation is safest for you.
Questions patients ask
What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic, or keyhole, surgery is done through a few small cuts using a thin camera and instruments, instead of one large cut. Recovery is usually quicker and less painful.
Do gallbladder stones always need surgery?
Stones that cause pain, infection or jaundice are usually treated by removing the gallbladder. Stones found by chance without symptoms may only need watching. Your surgeon will advise.
How long is the hospital stay after keyhole surgery?
For common keyhole operations such as gallbladder removal or hernia repair, many patients go home within one or two days. Your surgeon tells you what to expect.
