About Haematology
Haematology deals with diseases of the blood and the bone marrow, where blood is made. Our haematologist sees patients whose blood tests show a problem, such as low haemoglobin, too few or too many platelets or white cells, or bleeding and clotting that is not normal.
Sickle cell disease and thalassaemia are common in Vidarbha, and they need regular follow-up from childhood. Blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are treated with a plan made for each patient, and patients who may need a bone marrow transplant are assessed and prepared for it.
Questions patients ask
When should I see a haematologist?
See a haematologist when blood tests show low haemoglobin that does not improve, very low or very high platelets or white cells, or when you have easy bruising, bleeding that does not stop, or swollen glands without a clear cause.
Is sickle cell disease curable?
Most people with sickle cell disease live with it as a long-term condition. Regular check-ups, medicines and timely treatment of pain crises and infections keep many patients well. A bone marrow transplant can cure it in selected patients.
What should I bring to a haematology appointment?
Bring all your earlier blood reports, especially the complete blood count, any bone marrow or biopsy reports, and a list of the medicines and transfusions you have had.
