About Nephrology
Our nephrologists treat diseases of the kidneys, including long-term kidney disease, kidney problems caused by diabetes or high blood pressure, and sudden kidney failure.
Kidney disease often has no symptoms until it is advanced. People with diabetes or high blood pressure should have their kidney function checked with simple blood and urine tests every year.
Questions patients ask
What are the early signs of kidney disease?
Early kidney disease often has no signs. Later there may be swelling of the feet or face, tiredness, poor appetite, frothy urine or a change in the amount of urine.
Who should get their kidneys checked?
People with diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney disease, or those who take painkillers often should have yearly blood and urine tests for kidney function.
Does high creatinine always mean dialysis?
No. A raised creatinine shows the kidneys are under strain, but many patients are managed for years with medicines and diet. Dialysis is needed only when kidney function falls very low.
