Stroke

Also called Brain Attack, CVA, Cerebrovascular Disease, Cerebrovascular Accident

A stroke happens when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel bursts. It is an emergency: fast treatment saves brain cells and lowers disability.

Treated in Neurology · Critical Care (Intensivist) · Neurosurgery · Physiotherapy

Symptoms (remember BE FAST)

  • Balance: sudden loss of balance
  • Eyes: sudden loss of vision
  • Face: one side of the face drooping
  • Arm: weakness or numbness of one arm or leg
  • Speech: slurred or confused speech
  • Time: come to the hospital straight away

Causes

  • A clot blocking an artery to the brain (most strokes)
  • Bleeding in the brain
  • High blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol
  • Smoking, irregular heartbeat and heart disease

When to see a doctor

Any sudden weakness, facial droop, speech trouble or loss of vision needs emergency care straight away, even if it gets better. Note the time the symptoms started and tell the doctor.

Questions patients ask

Why does the time of a stroke matter?

Some treatments for stroke work only within the first few hours after symptoms start, so coming to the hospital quickly and knowing when it began can change the outcome.

Can stroke be prevented?

The risk can be lowered by controlling blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol, not smoking, staying active and treating an irregular heartbeat.
