Glaucoma

Glaucoma is damage to the nerve at the back of the eye, usually from high pressure inside the eye. It slowly takes away side vision, often without any warning signs.

Treated in Ophthalmology

Symptoms

  • Often none in the early stages
  • Gradual loss of side vision
  • In sudden (angle-closure) glaucoma: severe eye pain, red eye, headache, blurred vision and halos around lights

Causes

  • Raised pressure inside the eye
  • Age over 40
  • A family history of glaucoma
  • Diabetes and high blood pressure

When to see a doctor

Have an eye pressure check every year or two after 40, sooner if glaucoma runs in your family. Sudden eye pain with redness and blurred vision needs emergency care.

Treatment at Abhinav Hospital

Our ophthalmologist checks eye pressure and the optic nerve. Glaucoma is usually controlled with daily eye drops; laser treatment or surgery may be advised when drops are not enough. Treatment protects the vision you have, so regular follow-up matters.

Doctors who treat glaucoma

Questions patients ask

Can vision lost to glaucoma come back?

No. Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, which is why early checks and regular treatment are important.

Do glaucoma eye drops have to be used for life?

Usually yes. The drops keep eye pressure down, and stopping them lets the pressure and damage return.
