How fractures are treated
An X-ray shows where the bone is broken and whether the pieces have moved. Many fractures heal in a plaster or splint. A break that has moved, involves a joint or will not stay in place may need surgery, where plates, screws or rods hold the bone while it heals.
Healing
Many broken bones take about 6 to 12 weeks to heal, and it can take longer in older adults and in people with diabetes or who smoke. Physiotherapy afterwards helps bring back movement and strength.
Fracture care at Abhinav Hospital
The hospital has a fracture and trauma centre, operation theatres, a C-arm for X-ray imaging during surgery, and an ICU in the same building. Dr. Abhinav Bhatnagar, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, manages fractures and injuries. Our guide explains the golden hour after trauma.
Questions patients ask
How do I know if a bone is broken?
Common signs are severe pain, swelling, bruising, a limb that looks out of shape, and being unable to use it or put weight on it. Only an X-ray can confirm a fracture, so see a doctor after any injury with these signs.
Does every fracture need surgery?
No. Many fractures heal in a plaster or splint. Surgery is considered when the bone has moved out of place, a joint is involved, or the break will not stay in position.
How long does a fracture take to heal?
Many take about 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the bone, the type of break and your age and health. Your doctor checks healing with follow-up X-rays.
Should I move someone after an accident?
If the neck or back may be injured, do not move the person unless they are in danger. Keep them still and call for help.
Do you treat road accident injuries?
Yes. The hospital has a 24-hour emergency service and a fracture and trauma centre. Call +91 75582 21629 on the way if you can.
Can I use my health insurance after an accident?
Yes. In an emergency, come straight in. Your family can give us the card after admission and we send the request then. We offer cashless treatment with 34 insurance companies and TPAs.
